What is a CMS?
A content management system (CMS) is a web based application which will help you in creating a website and it is run via the web server you use. Before you buy or download a free content management system you need to look at the CMS features and make sure it is unobtrusive and flexible. It should be easy to install and use even for a layman.
CMS features that should be included
You must be able to build a small or semi-static web site and be able to create hundreds of pages should you wish to do so. Pages should be easy to create and managed as well as the layout and the content you want to add to the pages. Easy navigation is a very important CMS feature and layout codes and content codes must be separate, then layouts will be easy to edit. WYSIWYG editor, contact form and third-party add-ons are other features very important when looking for the right content management system for your web site. To have your CMS built in PHP will allow the integration of PHP scripts to the web site you built.
Knowledge Requirements to use a CMS
Most content management systems will require a little bit of knowledge and the most important will be the basic understanding of JavaScript errors so that you can locate, identify or even diagnose errors. Access log lines and access logs for web site errors and understanding error messages as sometimes an online application of any kind does have a problem. Basic understanding of CSS and HTML, the ability to manipulate permissions on remote hosts, transferring and working with files to remote hosts and to create a data base, back it up and restore the data base. If you do not have any knowledge at all then you must at least be able to do some research and with many educational articles on the Internet, you can teach yourself to build a web site through trial and error.

There are quite a lot of content management systems available to everyone, regardless of experience as most are very easy to install and use. Thoughtful developers make the use of CMS’s simple and straightforward even for beginners. It is important that you make sure of the software’s usability as you will want to make the use and extending of your platform as user-friendly as possible.
One of the most popular and easiest content management systems to install and use is WordPress. WordPress uses a PHP platform, excellent for beginners and very popular for blogging. It will take you less than five minutes to install this CMS. Great CMS features are complete with a WordPress installation, such as the WYSIWYG editor. If you are not familiar with a mark-up language such as HTML, you need not worry as it comes fully installed with a WYSIWYG editor. The administration section is simple and straightforward and all instructions are easy to follow after installation.
This content management system has an auto-update feature for plugins and the core from the backend and users doesn’t have to download anything. The backend layout surprises with intuitive and streamlined simplicity even in the theming language and choices. Themes are updated daily and thousands of layouts and different themes are available, which can be changed as often as you like to change the look and feel of your blog.
Multimedia and image uploading comes with the installation and the different themes and plugins available on WordPress are quite remarkable. WordPress is more than just a free downloadable Content Management System, as it is one of the only platforms with a full supportive WordPress Community. It is also very customizable. Another great CMS feature is the Plugin API for developers who wish for additional functions for their own personal need. A special section in the Codex offers references and guidelines to those in need to extend, contribute or modify to WordPress.

When looking for a content management system, you should ask yourself what you will be using the website you intend to build, for. There are thousands of CMS available on the Internet and many of them are free downloads, which takes you minutes to install and you can be an absolute beginner. You will not need any coding or mark-up language knowledge if you want to simply run a blog and you download a free CMS such as WordPress, Drupal or Joomla for example. These come with great flexible CMS features and you will be more than capable to run a small business from them as well.
Website developers wanting to build a corporate website with hundreds of pages, uses different packages such as CMS Made Simple. It is ideal for the creation and managing pages and content that is unobtrusive and simple. Many systems only have a few CMS features, but most include publishing, revision control, format management, retrieval, search and indexing. This application must create, store, manage and deploy the content from the pages onto the Web. Content includes not only text, but photos, videos, graphics, code and audio. Content Management System catalogs content, index content, assemble or select content when running and deliver the content to visitors in the requested way.
If you want a website tailored for content management, yet do not have superior knowledge then a content management system like SilverStripe is another option for you to investigate. It does not focus on blogging and is also built on its own PHP framework. The cms features in the base includes SEO support and content version control. Another feature that stands out is the customizable administrations area. SilverStripe does not have the large development community that WordPress has, but different widgets, themes and modules are available for added functionality. If you have basic knowledge of designing a website, you will be able to put your skills to the test with the modification of different themes.
If you run a large enterprise and wish to have more of an opportunity to develop your website, you may try Alfresco. It is a beefy system and not for beginners, yet it is remarkably easy to install. Web developers with knowledge will find it a powerful website and a great cms feature is the dropping of files into folders, which then are turned into web documents.
The problem is that most designers and developers don’t want to spend time learning a bunch of different CMSs. They want to learn one, or maybe two, and use those for all of their sites. That means they need something that’s both flexible and powerful.
The CMSs below fit that bill pretty well. Some have practically become household names (in designer households, at least), while others are a bit more obscure.
The first three, WordPress, Joomla!, and Drupal, are pretty unarguably the best CMSs out there. The next seven are a bit more subjective, but have a good combination of support, features, and ease-of-use.
Try them out, and decide for yourself which one best fits your needs and the needs of your clients.

WordPress

Strengths

Huge developer community with plenty of documentation and tutorials available
Free and paid plugins and specialized themes make it possible to create virtually any kind of site with WordPress
User-friendly dashboard for managing content

Weaknesses

Can be overkill for basic sites
A standard installation can have a lot of security issues, and is very vulnerable to attack without additional security measures
No official support outside of user forums, where you may or may not get an official response

Joomla!

Strengths
User authentication can be done with OpenID, Google, and LDAP, among others
More than 7000 extensions
Very active user community and tons of documentation available

Weaknesses

Back-end isn’t as user-friendly as some CMSs, though it’s still very usable
Lack of high-quality themes when compared to some other CMSs
Can be overkill for simple sites

Drupal

Strengths

Robust community support, including IRC channels and face-to-face meetups
More than 6,000 modules, making Drupal highly extensible
A large number of companies offering commercial support for Drupal

Weaknesses

Can be overkill for simple sites
A lack of really high-quality free and commercial themes (there are some, but not nearly as many as there are for some CMSs)
Theming system is fairly complicated

ExpressionEngine

Strengths

Commercial support
Focus on security, with no major security breaches ever
No restrictions on how a site can be designed

Weaknesses

Cost is high, especially for commercial sites
Can be overkill for simple or smaller sites
No interactive demo to try it out before you purchase

A content management system (CMS) allows publishing, editing, and modifying content as well as site maintenance from a central page. It provides a collection of procedures used to manage work flow in a collaborative environment. These procedures can be manual or computer-based. Main features The main features of Content Management Systems depend on the type of the system itself; often, some systems will highlight and/ or offer one or two features only, while other systems are “open-net” systems them more user-friendly and effective – than others.

The following is a partial list of popular CMS features:

Allow for a large number of people to share and contribute to stored data;

Control access to data based on user role (i.e., define information users or user groups can view, edit, publish, etc.);

Facilitate storage and retrieval of data;

Control data validity and compliance;

Reduce duplicate inputs;

Simplify report writing;

Improve communication among users.

Define data as almost anything: documents, movies, texts, pictures, phone numbers, articles etc.

Data types and usage

In a CMS, data can be defined as nearly anything: documents, movies, text, pictures, phone numbers, scientific data, and so forth. CMSs are frequently used for storing, controlling, revising, semantically enriching, and publishing documentation. Serving as a central repository, the CMS increases the version level of new updates to an already existing file. Version control is one of the primary advantages of a CMS. Enterprise content management systems An enterprise content management system (ECM) organizes documents, contacts, and records that are related to the organizational processes of an enterprise—i.e., commercial organizations. It serves to manage the enterprise’s unstructured information content, rendering the multiplicity of file format and location more manageable. It achieves this goal by streamlining access, eliminating bottlenecks, optimizing security, and maintaining integrity.

Content management systems allow people all over the world to add text and data to a shared site. If you need to meet with contributors in person, you might consider purchasing travel health insurance. Click here for coverage options..
